Earth Day

Thank you for joining us to celebrate Earth Day! The City of Thorold welcomed everyone at the Earth Day event on Saturday, April 25 at Canada Games Park, 2021 Canada Games Way. Admission was free to all.

Highlights:

  • The City of Thorold and Gauld Nurseries partnered to give away 200 three foot saplings to families attending the event.
  • Thorold Garden Club gave away Red Oak seedlings to help encourage tree planting and support a greener future.

Thank you to our speakers and vendors who joined us with their environmentally-friendly products, services and/or educational materials and presented engaging topics related to Earth Day.

A special thank you to Bioveld Canada who organized a community clean-up at Mc Adam Park and in the surrounding neighbourhood with their staff.

Tami Lyons is the President of the Thorold Garden Club and a passionate advocate for getting children involved in gardening and nature. She enjoys helping families discover how rewarding it can be to grow plants together while learning about the environment and caring for the earth.

Through her interactive “Gardening with Children” presentation, Tami encourages kids to ask questions, share their ideas, and get excited about growing their own plants. Her session is designed to be fun, engaging, and hands-on, often including seed giveaways and opportunities for children to take part in activities like the Pumpkin and Sunflower Growing Contest.

Tami believes that when children learn to garden, they develop curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. 🌱🌻

How did residents or businesses participate in the Community Clean-up?

Residents, businesses, organizations, schools, and community partners were invited to join the City of Thorold on Earth Day by hosting their own community clean-up. Volunteers were encouraged to pick-up litter along sidewalks, parks, and trails in the City.

  1. They emailed event@thorold.ca to let us know the area they planned on cleaning and identified a garbage collection point for City staff afterward.
  2. We added the clean-up map to our website with a meeting location and time so other members of the community could join the clean up.
  3. On the morning of Saturday, April 25, clean-up leaders visited the Earth Day event to collect free supplies like gloves and garbage bags from City staff.
  4. Following the community clean-up, City staff collected bags of trash at pick-up points.
