Preparing for Emergencies

Before an emergency happens, it’s important to make sure you have an overall plan in place for your household. Follow the steps outlined below to:

  1. Develop your plan
  2. Build an emergency kit
  3. Make sure you stay informed should an emergency occur

In an emergency, your household may not be together, or you may be asked to evacuate your home. Thinking about what you would do in different situations and making a plan with every member of your household is the first step to being prepared. Include actions that will help yourself and your family stay safe before, during and after an emergency event.

Record the important details of your emergency plan using the format that works best for you, whether on paper or digitally.

This emergency kit should be prepared ahead of time and accessible for all members of the family.

Your emergency kit should have everything you and your household would need to be safe and take care of yourselves for at least three days immediately following an emergency. Make sure to include a copy of your emergency plan in your emergency kit and share it with those in your household. Let everyone know where your emergency kit is located.

During an emergency, you should stay tuned to local news channels. Be sure to have a portable, battery-operated or crank radio in your emergency kit in case of power outages. Follow local authorities for up-to-date information and instructions.

Alert Ready in Ontario is part of a national service designed to deliver Canadians' critical and potentially life-saving emergency alert messages.
