Province approves reduced Council size for the City of Thorold for the 2026 Municipal Election
The Province of Ontario has approved changes to Thorold’s City Council composition for the 2026 municipal election.
The approved changes follow a decision by Thorold City Council at its March 24, 2026, meeting, to support a reduction in the size of Council.
Because the deadline under the Municipal Act for municipalities to independently make changes to Council size prior to the 2026 election had passed, provincial approval was required to proceed. The regulation enacted by the Province is now in effect for the 2026–2030 term of Council.
Thorold voters will now elect six (6) City Councillors and a Mayor when they vote in the 2026 municipal election, replacing the current structure of eight (8) Councillors and a Mayor.
