Update on the Cybersecurity Incident

The City of Thorold is providing an update regarding the cybersecurity incident identified on June 1, 2026, involving unauthorized access to certain systems within our network.

The investigation conducted in collaboration with external cybersecurity experts is now complete and affected systems and our network has been safely restored. Notably, the City acted promptly to remediate the incident and restored its systems and services in a timely manner, minimizing disruption to residents and municipal operations. We have implemented additional safeguards to further strengthen our cybersecurity environment. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement and relevant regulatory authorities, as appropriate.

The investigation determined that a limited amount of data containing personal information was taken from the City’s network by an unauthorized individual during the incident. The City has undertaken a detailed review of the data involved to identify individuals who may have been impacted. We are currently in the process of notifying all potentially affected individuals by mail, and they will be offered complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services through Equifax. Information about these services, including enrollment instructions, will be in the notification letter.  

The City understands the importance of safeguarding personal and confidential information in our care and takes this responsibility seriously. We remain committed to transparency and accountability and will continue to take steps to strengthen our systems and reduce the risk of future incidents.
