Public Notice : Ontario Rabies Prevention Program Underway

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) will once again be conducting its annual wildlife rabies prevention program across parts of Ontario from July through September 2026.

As part of the program, oral rabies vaccine baits will be distributed in selected areas to help prevent the spread of rabies among wild raccoons, skunks and foxes. In the Niagara area, bait distribution is expected to occur by a low-flying helicopter in late August and early September, while hand distribution in urban areas may begin in mid-July.

What do the vaccine baits look like?
The baits are small green blocks made of vegetable-based wax with a vanilla-sugar scent that attracts wildlife. Each bait contains a small plastic packet of liquid rabies vaccine and is clearly labelled with the message: "Do not eat" and a toll-free phone number.

What should you do if you find one?
•    Leave the bait where it is whenever possible so it can be consumed by wildlife.
•    Avoid touching or moving the bait unless necessary.
•    If you must handle a bait, wear gloves or use a plastic bag to avoid direct contact.
•    Supervise pets while outdoors to discourage them from picking up the baits.

Are the baits safe?
Yes. The vaccine baits have been extensively tested and are considered safe for wildlife, people and pets.

However:
•    The baits do not replace regular rabies vaccinations for pets provided by your veterinarian.
•    If your pet consumes a bait, it is generally not harmful. However, owners of pets that are immunocompromised or have severe allergies should contact their veterinarian if they have concerns.

About rabies
Rabies is a serious disease that can affect any warm-blooded mammal, including people. Although terrestrial (non-bat) rabies has not been detected in southern Ontario for more than two years, the province continues preventative baiting in areas at higher risk to help keep wildlife and communities safe.
