Flood Alert Statement from Niagara Peninsula Authority : August 22

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) is advising local municipalities, emergency services, and the public of the potential for flooding within its jurisdiction. This includes the Niagara Region

A slow-moving weather system is expected to bring thunderstorms and significant rainfall from Saturday, August 22, through Monday, August 24. Total rainfall amounts of 40 to 60 mm are possible, with locally higher amounts where thunderstorms develop. Thunderstorms may produce an additional 15 to 25 mm in affected areas.

Major flooding along larger watercourses is not currently anticipated. However, intense rainfall may cause flash flooding along small and urbanized watercourses, rapid increases in water levels, and localized flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Current water levels remain well below critical elevations.

• Residents are strongly advised to stay away from creeks, rivers, and other waterbodies. Water levels may rise quickly, and banks may become slippery and unstable.
• Children and pets should be kept away from waterways.
• Property owners are encouraged to clear debris from culverts, catch basins, and ditches.

Our Public Works staff will be inspecting stormwater infrastructure and monitoring known flood-prone areas.
