2023 Thorold Senior of the Year and Senior Citizens Association Senior of the Year Awards

The City of Thorold’s Age Friendly Committee and the Thorold Senior Citizens Association invite the community to submit nominations for the 2023 Thorold Senior of the Year Award and 2023 Thorold Senior Citizens Association Senior of the Year Award. 

The Awards will be presented on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. at the Ontario Paper Thorold Seniors Centre. All are welcome to attend.

Eligibility Criteria
2023 Thorold Senior of the Year Award

To be eligible for a 2023 Thorold Senior of the Year Award, the senior must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 60 years or older
  • Has contributed to the enrichment of the social, cultural or civic life of the Thorold community
  • Has made this commitment without thought of personal or financial gain
  • Is not a previous recipient of the award
  • A resident of Thorold
 2023 Thorold Senior Citizens Association Senior of the Year

To be eligible for a 2023 Thorold Senior Citizens Association Senior of the Year, the senior must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 50 years or older
  • Has contributed to the enrichment of the social and cultural life at the Ontario Paper Thorold Seniors Citizens Centre by volunteering and through other positive endeavours
  • Has made this commitment without thought of personal or financial gain
  • Is not a previous recipient of the award
  • Does not have to be a resident of Thorold but must have been a member of the Ontario Paper Thorold Senior Citizens Centre for a minimum of 5 years.
Nominations

The nomination period opens March 2 and will remain open until May 1. Nomination forms can be submitted online, or can be picked up and submitted at City Hall, the Ontario Paper Thorold Senior Citizens Centre, or the Thorold Public Library. Hard copy forms can also be mailed to City Hall.

Submission Guidelines
  • All information must be verifiable
  • Submissions must include:
    • Reason for the nomination; including background and related information
    • Length of time volunteering
    • The special work or service
    • The positive impact this volunteering has had on the Thorold community and/or at the Ontario Paper Thorold Senior Citizens Centre
    • Who has benefited from these efforts
  • You cannot nominate: yourself, someone who has passed away, someone who currently holds political office, or an individual cannot be nominated for achievement related to a current or past political appointment

Tony Vandermaas was recognized as the 2022 Thorold Senior of the Year. Tony has served on various community fundraising committees, including Friends of the Thorold Public Library, Grimsby, Lincoln and District Association for the Mentally Handicapped Walk-a-thon, Vineland Fun Run Committee and the Friends of the Richmond Street Forest. Tony also acted as Public Relations Chairman for Thorold Canada 125 Festival Committee and is currently a member of the Mel Swart Lake Gibson Conservation Area Fundraising Committee.

Lora Vary was recognized as the 2022 Thorold Senior Citizens Association Senior of the Year. Lora joined the Thorold Senior Centre in 2010 as a member, becoming an executive board member in 2012 and vice president in 2014. In 2016, she became president and served in that role until 2021. During her time as president, she was instrumental in the advancement of the Association and spearheaded many fundraising activities such as Seniors Information Fairs, Mother's Day Tea, Fashion Shows and Guest Speaker presentations.
