Thanks for Celebrating with the City

Thanks for joining us at the 3-day Canada Day long weekend where we sold 50th Anniversary merchandise, offered a 50th Anniversary Card for residents to sign and displayed the Wall of Reflection. We are still welcoming I Love Thorold video submissions. Funding for this 50th anniversary celebration was in part by Rolling Meadows.

Photo Gallery: Wall of Reflection will appear here on the public site.

Wall of Reflection Winner

We invited Thorold residents and community partners to submit their favourite photo of Thorold from past or present, showcasing our growth from a village to a city. Local Thorold resident Jim Kalogerakos won the best photo award for the Wall of Reflection displayed for our 50th Anniversary over the Canada Day festivities. The Events Working Group was looking for "heart" and he delivered with a photo of his grandson Karsten (third generation Thorold resident) sitting happily on the polar bear sculpture located at Lock 7 Viewing Complex. Jim decided to pay it forward and donate his gift card prize to Community Cares of Thorold.

 Happy Anniversary Card Winner

We invited our youth to create a drawing of their Thorold community for our 50th anniversary. Camille Filippetto's illustration was chosen by the Events Working Group and featured on a giant anniversary card at the Canada Day long weekend celebrations for residents to colour and sign. The 50th Anniversary Card is still available in the City Hall lobby with markers if residents missed signing it at Canada Day.

The land was acquired from the Ojibway in 1784. Founded in 1786, Thorold stands as a historic city within Ontario’s Niagara Region. It was named after Sir John Thorold, a British Parliament member known for his sympathy towards United Empire Loyalists. Thorold experienced significant growth with the opening of the Welland Canal in 1829, which connected Lake Ontario to Lake Erie, boosting trade and industry in the region. Industries such as milling, shipping, and manufacturing thrived, shaping Thorold’s early economy. As a result, it became a village in 1850, then grew to become a town in 1875. It would be one hundred years before Thorold incorporates into a City. In the meantime, the town would be introduced to a telephone, watch electricity light up a street railway and downtown street lights, and congregate in their new Town Hall at Chestnut Hall.
