Fire departments of the Niagara region come together to promote ‘Test it Tuesday’

May 16 is “Test it Tuesday” in the Niagara region.
The Niagara Chapter of the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers Association is asking that you test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are working properly. You may even see fire crews from your local fire station performing home visits in your neighbourhood. They will be checking to ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and working properly.
“The safety of our residents is at top of mind for Thorold Fire and Emergency Services with everything we do,” says Terry Dixon, director of fire and emergency services at the City of Thorold. “Our fire fighters will be visiting residents on May 16 to offer help with testing their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are working correctly, ensuring they will be protected in the case of a fire or carbon monoxide-related emergency.”
When properly installed and maintained, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms provide the early warning necessary to safely escape from a house fire or carbon monoxide exposure. Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odourless gas that is a by-product of incomplete combustion of many types of common fuels.
“Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, together with a well-practiced home escape plan, gives you the ability to get everyone to safety during a fire or carbon monoxide exposure in their home. On ‘Test it Tuesday,’ push the button and hear the beep!” says Kellie Kubik, president, Niagara Chapter of the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers Association.
