City of Thorold Statement – Clarification Regarding Misinformation About Lakeview Cemetery

The City of Thorold is aware of several inaccurate statements circulating in our community regarding the recent situation at Lakeview Cemetery. We understand the importance of transparency and wish to clarify several key points to ensure residents have accurate information.
1. No exclusive or faith-based designations
Lakeview Cemetery is a municipally operated, public cemetery that serves residents of all faiths and backgrounds.
There are no religious designations within the cemetery and mausoleum, and no areas reserved exclusively for individuals of any particular faith. The cemetery’s mausoleum is open to all who wish to make use of it, in accordance with standard municipal by-laws and operational procedures.
2. No Council decision on this matter
The matter relating to the Masud family’s burial arrangements did not come before City Council for discussion or decision.
The situation arose from an operational error in the allocation of a cemetery plot by City Staff, which a Senior City staff member subsequently corrected in accordance with existing cemetery by-laws. There was no city council meeting held to make a decision on this matter, it was an operational matter.
3. Commitment to respect and inclusion
The City of Thorold is deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its services and continues to work collaboratively with community partners, including faith leaders, to strengthen mutual understanding and trust.
All residents, regardless of faith, are welcome at Lakeview Cemetery.
4. Respectful public dialogue
The City is aware of personal and slanderous comments directed at members of City Council through email, social media, and public demonstrations.
We ask all residents to engage in respectful dialogue and to refrain from personal attacks. Our shared goal must be to foster unity, compassion, and understanding across our community.
We encourage residents to refer to official City statements and verified sources for accurate information on this matter.
