The City of Thorold hosted a groundbreaking ceremony today for their new District 1 fire station.

Located on McCleary Drive, the 16,000 square foot facility will be more central to Thorold, catering to the rapid growth of the city and providing direct access to the highway.

“We are thankful to City Council for demonstrating the leadership they did in moving this initiative forward,” says Manoj Dilwaria, chief administrative officer. “In addition to becoming Thorold’s new fire headquarters, this station will also function as our new Emergency Operations Centre.”

As the City’s new Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), the fire station will feature a large meeting space and enhanced technology suited to operating an EOC. It will also include three truck bays, proper office space and living quarters for career staff, and individual lockers and a group physical fitness area for all firefighters.

“We couldn’t be more excited for construction to begin. We have 88 fire staff on our team who all play an essential role in our operations, and 21 career staff and 25 volunteer firefighters will be situated at this new station,” says Fire Chief Terry Dixon. “Building this new fire station is integral as we continue to prioritize the safety of our community.”

Construction of the new fire station is set to begin in early September and is estimated to be complete by mid 2024.
