Today, May 26, the City of Thorold’s Age Friendly Committee celebrated the contributions of seniors in the community at a ceremony held in advance of Seniors’ Month.

“Older adults in the City of Thorold play an essential role in enriching the social and cultural life in our Community,” says Mayor Terry Ugulini. “We are happy to be celebrating the contribution and impact they have on our city today, and every day.”

Held in partnership with the Thorold Senior Citizens Association, the ceremony took place at the Ontario Paper Thorold Senior Citizens Centre, and included a flag raising and chat and memorial bench dedication.

"'Happy to Chat' benches had their start in England,” says Jean D’Amelio-Swyer, age friendly committee chair. “We can proudly say that the city of Thorold now has three benches, one of which is here at the centre. When someone is sitting on one of the benches, it means they are open to conversation as an avenue for people to get to know each other and make new friends."

Seniors’ Month is a province-wide celebration of the invaluable knowledge and experience that seniors pass on to all ages of the community.

Later this month, the City will be recognizing two impactful individuals as Thorold’s 2023 Senior of the Year and 2023 Senior Citizen Association’s Senior of the Year at the Seniors’ Awards Ceremony, held on June 21.
