School Board Trustee

Trustees are elected during municipal elections every four years and are directly accountable to the community.  

In the City of Thorold, electors cast votes for trustees for the following:

  • English-Public
  • English-Separate
  • French-Public
  • French-Separate

How to run for Trustee

As Trustee jurisdictions cross municipal boundaries, school boards must determine the allocation of areas .  Individuals that are interested in running for trustee should submit their Nomination Papers to the lead municipal office (generally the municipality with the higher population of electors).  

If a person wishes to run as a​​ candidate in the upcoming 2022 School Board Election, they must first file Nomination Papers with the Clerk of the lead municipal office, which is the City of Thorold.

In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, the first day to file Nomination Papers is May 2, 2022.

Filing Nomination Papers

Nominations must be filed in person with the Clerk of the lead municipal office.  To file a Nomination, you must provide the following to the Clerk of the lead municipal office:

  • Nomination Paper
  • Current acceptable identification
  • Nomination Filing Fee 
    • ​​$100.00 for candidates running for school board trustee

If an agent is filing a nomination on your behalf, the agent is required to provide the above documents, as well as, their own identification.

Qualifications for School Board Trustee Candidates​​​

In order to run as a Trustee on t​he day the nomination paper is filed (with the applicable office), a person must be:

  • a Canadian citizen
  • ​at least 18 years of age
  • a resident in the area of jurisdiction of the board
  • not legally prohibited from voting
  • ​not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office

Who cannot be a Sc​​​hool Board Trustee Candidate

The following persons are disqualified from being elected as a school board trustee, or from holding office on any school board:

  • a Clerk, Treasurer, Deputy Clerk or Deputy Treasurer of any municipality within the area of jurisdiction of the school board, except those on an unpaid leave of absence
  • a member of the Provincial Legislature, the Federal House of Commons or Senate who has not resigned from their office by the close of nominations (Proof of resignation must be provided by the close of nominations or the Clerk will not certify the nomination)
  • a candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit in the last municipal election or by-election

School Board Em​​p​​loyees

  • Employees of any school board (including supply teachers) are disqualified from being elected as school board trustee or from holding office on any school board, except during a leave of absence;
  • The employee must be on a leave of absence before filing their nomination paper with the appropriate office;
  • ​The employee must provide the Clerk with documentation showing that they have taken a leave of absence and the effective date.

Acceptable Identification

Candidates filing a nomination must present acceptable identification showing name, qualifying address and signature.  This can be one piece of ID or a combination of two pieces of ID.

A link will be provided closer to the opening of the Nomination Period to assist individuals in determining what identification is acceptable.

Withdrawing a Nominati​​on

If you have submitted your Nomination Papers and are no longer wishing to run in the 2022 School Board Election, you must file a Withdrawal of Nomination Form prior to the end of the Nomination Period.  Candidates cannot withdraw their nomination after the Nomination Period has closed.

Candidates that have withdrawn their nomination are still required to file a financial statement.
